Hale Library Everitt Learning Commons

Kansas State University
Manhattan, Kansas

The Everitt Learning Commons has transformed Hale Library’s first floor from a dark, under-utilized space into a forward-thinking 24-hour student study landscape. Through an interactive design process involving presentations, workshops and charettes, the plan for the Everitt Learning Commons focused on collaboration. The first-floor entrance, which was closed in 1994, has been reopened and connects to a highly active pedestrian promenade through the heart of campus.

The breadth of resources in the learning commons is wide-ranging. Because there are multiple applications of what collaboration looks like and how it can be practiced, the design called for a variety of zones that support groups from two to 25. Centrally located, 12 reservable small group collaboration room offer students abundant white boards, electrical outlets and seating options. Diagonally bisecting these rooms are multi-modal group seating options with available mobile monitors and white boards. The former exterior wall of the 1955 addition, featuring Kansas limestone, has been re-exposed and coupled with modern ceiling treatments and furnishings.
