In the summer of 2021, the University of Kansas engaged PGAV Architects in association with Solomon Cordwell Buenz to develop a “Centennial Master Plan” for prioritized reinvestment in renovations needed to address pressing deferred maintenance concerns and transform Watson into a model 21st century academic research library.
Master plan recommendations included:
- Reconstructing the main north entrance to provide a welcoming, ADA accessible entrance
- Introducing a new vertical circulation core and centrally located combined help desk to improve intuitive wayfinding
- Reducing print collections stored on site from 1.2M to 800K volumes to create additional individual and group study spaces
- Transforming the 1962 library addition into a flexible, daylit zone for student study, research engagement and new conference and instructional spaces
- Demolishing and reconstructing the existing Central Tier Stack to create new patron space
- Revitalizing the 1924 Grand Reading Room
- Upgrading restrooms; providing new all gender restrooms, mothers’ and meditation rooms
- Comprehensive interior renovations including new finishes, power distribution, lighting, and furnishings
- Creating an expanded Academic Commons and Café on the main level, a new flexible 125-seat multipurpose events space, and an expanded flexible exhibit gallery space
- Phased replacement of aging mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure
