National Archives and Records Administration

Kansas City, Missouri

The Central Plains Region of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) had long been located far from public view within a federal complex in Kansas City, Missouri. Today, the National Archives at Kansas City has become part of the Union Station complex, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

The historic Adams Express Building was designed by Jarvis Hunt and is located immediately west of Union Station. The 1920 Beaux-Arts structure was renovated and expanded to make it suitable for high density storage, collection processing, collection preservation workrooms, administration space, and public access opportunities, including research rooms and exhibit spaces. The project team included the GSA, NPS, Broadway Square Partnership, and Union Station.
